Virginia Creeper Marathon: (aka the race that didn't happen!)

You may remember that I mentioned running the $10 Virginia Creeper Marathon on March 25th for fun.

But I didn't do it!

For me, running and racing is about the joy of running.

Simple as that.

And I just wasn't feeling it when the weekend rolled around!

Of course I've been enjoying running recently, but I'm not in marathon race shape, so if I were going to do it, it was going to be just for fun.

BUT...fun for me doesn't sound like
  • driving 6 hours to get there (didn't realize this when I signed up for it, I'd thought it was like 1.5 hours away)
  • running a marathon in rainy weather (rained in VA all weekend)
So I was still on the fence about it Friday afternoon and then when I went to check the website for my registration confirmation, my name wasn't posted on the confirmation page.  So I think there was a problem with my registration being processed in time, even though the race director had told me that he'd accept my application.  And I didn't feel like making a stink about it, so I just took it as a sign that it wasn't meant to be :)

So, instead of a marathon, my weekend was filled with:
Kombucha at the Urban Farmhouse
Meeting a precious love/BFF/baby goat at the Shockoe Design Day
in downtown Richmond
Watching my talented burlesque friend show off her moves
Listening to Charles Krauthammer at the Richmond Forum
Running 15 miles at a 7:59 pace
NOTE:  this is an old picture of me pretending to run,
just needed a little visual here.
Have you ever signed up for a race and not done it (due to injury/laziness/etc.)?
I felt bad about it for about 25 seconds and then I felt relieved, happy, and content.  But if I had originally planned on taking it seriously as a race-race and paid money for it (they never cashed my registration check), I would have probably been really upset about my change in heart.
Oh and then the first year that I was signed up for the Richmond Marathon in 2010 and had a stress fracture and didn't run it.  I was very upset that time!

  1. Seriously, this is getting weird because I can relate to almost every single thing in this post.

I did bail on a race once - the Maymont XCountry 8k in 2010. It was 95 degrees and 100% humidity that day and I just did not feel like putting myself through it.

    Urban Farmhouse: Love that place

Baby Goats: We have 2 at Maymont right now! Come visit them they are SO ADORABLE!

Burlesque: Tonight I'm going to the Fun for a Cause Drag Show and I'm so excited!

Richmond Forum: Have you SEEN their season for 12-13??? It is AMAZING!!! I want to subscribe but fear it will all be sold out before I get the chance to join.

    1. I saw some grown up goats at Maymont the other day, I missed the babies....I must go back to visit them, yes!

Yes, the lineup for 12-13 is going to be amazing, i can't wait to go! At least huge headliners in one season (Bill Clinton and Stephen Spielberg) plus all the others look super interesting to me as well. I bet someone talked with Spielberg while he was in town and convinced him to come :)

  3. I kind of wish I had bailed on my marathon this weekend when I saw bad weather....

But yes I have not run races in the past: injury, other stuff came up, etc.

  5. Kombucha is my favorite lately. Have you tried the one with Chai in it? So yummy.

  6. I have never tried Kombucha. Looks like you had a great weekend and didn't have to drive 6 hours to run in the rain! That goat is so cute! I keep trying to convince my husband we need a goat, but he thinks I am crazy!

  7. 6 hours seems like a long drive for a fun run and I most likely would have bagged it too. Top that off with not really feelin the distance, I think you made the right call and instead had what looks like a pretty awesome weekend!

  8. Good for you for deciding not to do it! I actually have a race that I potentially may or may not run in June, depending on when our Maine vacation falls. Most of the races I sign up for are pretty expensive, so I always make sure to go. 6 hours and $10, totally worth skipping :) Happy Tuesday!

  9. Sounds like you made the right decision and had a fun-filled weekend!

  10. I think you made the right decision about the race. 6 hours is a far way to go for a "fun run."

You always have the coolest weekends! Omg the baby goat looks so peaceful and cute! :)

  11. Sounds to me like the right choice. Look at all the other fun stuff you did! And for the price, no guilt involved in missing it, either.

    I want that baby goat!

  12. Yep - the USA half marathon in DC a few weeks ago -- due to not risking more injury.

You only get one life, if you're not going to enjoy something, no use in doing it!

  13. I have two races I signed up for next month, the first of which (a half) I definitely won't be able to run and the second of which (a 15K) is looking dubious. I have a 5K and 10K in May that I haven't signed up for yet and still have hopes for. We'll see how my back behaves!

It sounds to me like you did the right thing with that race. It will still be there if you want to do it next year.

  14. Looks like it was definitely a good choice for you. And hey, you still got a good run in. THIS is the reason I procrastinate on signing up for races. I'm never super committed till last minute!

  15. My sister just took a kombucha class. I've never tried it. How is it??? Usually I would only feel bad about a race if I felt like I wasted a lot of dough on it, so I wouldn't feel bad about a $10 race. And look at all the cool stuff you did instead. Hold a goat or race? Definitely hold a goat!

  16. i have missed races due to injury which has been so frustrating! i also skipped out on a free 5k that i had "signed up" for this past fall because i was definitely not feeling running fast. haha! looks like you had the best weekend despite not going to run the race!

  17. Oh yes, I missed three races last year due to a fracture in my foot. It was so depressing. Sounds like you had a great weekend anyway!

  18. Makes sense to me!
I'd rather hang out with friends and the goats, too!

  19. a 6-hr drive is plenty good enough excuse!! kinda worked out that the director forgot about your entry form i guess. you are so cultured with all your local events. sometimes i wish i owned a burlesque club. haha. those are probably illegal here in SC since we're still backwards and slow.

  20. Good for you! I've never not run a race that I registered for, but I'm seriously considering not running the marathon I'm training for in June. I'll still keep training just in case, but it just might not happen.
