Anyway, I mentioned on my last post that I had wanted to qualify for the NYC marathon before they drastically decrease my age group's half-marathon qualifying standard from 1:37:00 down to 1:27:00 for the 2013 NYC marathon.
But a comment from my dear Celia from NYC prompted me to re-investigate the fine print on the 2012 application instructions here.....
......which revealed that the deadline to have run a 1:37:00 half marathon and qualify for NYC was before January 31st, 2012!
Which means that I missed it.
Oops!
Regardless, I'll still probably do a half marathon in the next month or so. I've never raced a half marathon, but I do still want to do one while I have a decent level of training this spring, even if it's not going to win me a guaranteed entry to NYC.
(PS I did run a half marathon as a training run under someone else's bib one time, but that doesn't count since it wasn't in my name and was totally casual.)
Are you interested in running the NYC Marathon? How would you enter: qualify/lottery/charity?
I am NOT planning on entering the lottery to do it this year, because my desire to do it in 2012 was just motivated by the allure of the challenge of qualifying. I'd like to do it in a couple years as a "fun marathon" and this fall I'd like to have a faster marathon.

| TWO nurses on the run ;) I loved meeting Susan and running in NYC last summer, can't wait to go back to NYC! |

| Excited to run through the streets of this city, but perhaps in a couple years. |

I also would have wanted to quify this year but got injured and then realized the deadline was January...
ReplyDeleteI am in the lottery for NYC this year because it would be my 10th anniversary of running my 1st marathon, NYC this year! If I don't get in, I'll just work my butt off to run a 1:27....
AS you know, I'm doing the 9+1 to qualify for NYC in 2013, although there is a slight chance that I'll get in for 2012 through work... Fingers crossed! Happy Thursday, Katherine! Maybe one of these days we can run a race together, but you're much speedier than me...
ReplyDeleteI always said I would only run NYC again if I qualified (it was my first marathon). Then they changed the standards. BUT I am signed up for Brooklyn, which is part of the reason I know these crazy loopholes. hehe. I am not sure if I want to run NYC. I do have guaranteed entry through the 9+1 too. I am all over the place on if I even want to run a fall marathon or just train for speed...Everything is selling out which makes me feel a little panicky!
ReplyDeleteFor me it would have to be charity or lottery because I'm a slooow runner who is too lazy to work at becoming faster.
ReplyDeleteMy first marathon is coming up this September, so I'll see after that time whether I'd ever consider doing another! But, if I don't hate the distance, I would LOVE to run NYC...I love that city and think the atmosphere would be electric.
You know I'm in for this fall! I had never even considered running a full until I surprised myself and qualified for NYC. Now I can't wait! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how I feel about the NYC marathon. I don't like crowded races at all, plus it's very pricy. I rather run for races which benefit a charity. On the other side, it looks soooo special on tv! :)
ReplyDeleteBummer about the change in the times! 1:27 for a guy or girl is an insanely fast time!
ReplyDeleteI did actually register for the NYC lottery last year, but it's good that I didn't get in, since I wouldn't have been able to do it due to injury. Eventually it would be fun to do that race, it just seems so awesome running in NY among 45K people!
well for me it would have to be lottery
ReplyDeleteit is too far but if I survive my first marathon ...I would never say no to NYC!
I have absolutely no desire to run NYC. I'm not entirely sure why but the chaos that goes with the start does not appeal to me at all and I know it would make The Husband {my build in cheerleader} go completely crazy. However, I've heard amazing things about the race and have to admit it would be pretty cool to run through all the parts of the city!
ReplyDeleteSo far I like small races. I'd need a good running buddy for a big race like that!! The crowds frighten me!
ReplyDeleteTotally on my bucket list!!! I would try to do it by qualifying. :) Try being key word...
ReplyDeleteI got into NYC via the 9 + 1 program. I enjoyed doing it once - it was fun! I have entry to it this year, but don't think I'll do it.
ReplyDeleteAh that sucks! I actually knew the little loophole- but the qualifying times could/can also be achieved in the NYC Half (this past march) and the Brooklyn half. I can't believe how much they are changing the times by!! Thats crazy.
ReplyDeleteI have never run a marathon before but actually qualified for New York this year (through the nyc half)... I am not certain yet but I am kind of thinking of doing it :) I know the crowds are kind of nuts but I have cheered from the sidelines before and it looks amazing.
I got qualifying times for last year and this year, and that's how I got in...and it's the easiest way to get in! 9+1 is annoying and expensive, and charity is a lot of work. And I'm terrible about asking for money. I'll run it this year (I think) because it's the last year I'll get guaranteed entry since the new times are ridiculously fast and I can't do that. I do think NYC is worth running...it's really fun and the crowds are great!
ReplyDeleteOh and thanks for the shoutout! Come visit soon!
ReplyDeleteI didn't even know they started a qualifying time! Those times are ridiculous!!!! I do want to run it one day and would prob just do the lottery - hopefully they keep that :)
