Changing Speed on iPod Audiobooks

I went for my first post-marathon run yesterday!

2.5 fun miles over to Tappan's place for lunch.

I've been LOVING being lazy (other than that bike ride this weekend...)
One of my favorite methods to "take it lazy."
Physically, legs have felt great, I just want to give my body as long as possible to heal.  I wanna make sure all the little broken fibers have enough time to build back up.

Mentally, I want to wait to truly run until I start to get a little stir-crazy from resting, I don't want to rush back into running and get burned out.

Today I want to share a cool new discovery on my iPhone with you.

As you may remember, I listen to books on tape while I run.  Some books can take HOURS to listen to, but you can cut this time in half by pressing the "2X" button on your iPhone screen (from the basic music app).
The human brain is amazing and you quickly adjust to the faster speed and after a few minutes, you don't even notice.

NOTE:  this only works for audiobooks, NOT music files.

And by the way, if you enjoy learning about the human mind, please read "The Power of Habit" by Charles Duhigg.  Learn how to drastically change your life, by doing very simple stuff.  Discover how the right habits were crucial to the success of Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, and Martin Luther King, Jr.  The books also taps into a whole new understanding of human nature and its potential for transformation.

What do you use to listen to music/books while running/exercising?  iPod/iPhone/Old School Walkman or Discman?
I listen to books on my iPhone when I'm alone (need my phone if there's an emergency) and music playlists my iPod during races.

  1. I love listening to audiobooks especially on long runs, I don't know that I would speed it up, they cost so much I want them to last as long as possible before I buy another one. I also love podcasts, I almost never listen to music while running anymore.

    1. See if your local library "checks out" audio books. mine let's you download them as if you were checkin out a regular book

    2. Yes great idea! My local library has TONS of great books to borrow for free!

  2. I never listened to audio books before. I have a long roadtrip this weekend so maybe I will try it out. I usually don't listen to music on my runs. Only if I am running on my TM do I listen to tunes. I have problems with the headphones staying in my freakishly small ears and I also like to know what is going on around me. It is easier for me to listen to music when it's cold outside because my headband keeps my earplugs in. :-)

Great job on getting in a short, easy run. I am jealous!

Yes, go to your local library and get some books to listen to while you drive, it'll make the time FLY by!

  3. I rarely listen to anything while running, but decided to take music along for a run this weekend and enjoyed the company! I'll have to try audio books, too...

    1. Sometimes it is very nice to run without listening to anything! It's peaceful, a great way to get into the zen zone.

  4. What AP do you use for your audio books?

    1. I'm not sure what AP means, but I either get my books from Audible.com or from my local library!

  5. Great tip! I read very quickly, so most audio books put me to sleep at their speed. My husband could use this hint - he listens to Yale lectures (available on iTunes U) while he runs. Isn't he cute?

    1. Haha that IS cute.
Yeah it drives me crazy sometimes how slow and annoying some of the voices are.

  8. I like to listen to podcasts during my long runs.

We used to have some of our lectures podcasted in medical school, and I would listen to them at twice the normal speed when the lecturers were really slow and boring. Beat going to class ; )

    1. Love podcasts! And that's amazing that your lectures were on podcasts, that'd be great for rewinding and listening to things that you want to hear again.

  9. i love that 2x feature! i discovered it on accident. it works with podcasts too. funny enough, my post today was about listening to music. i listen to music mostly, i've done a book on tape before during marathon training though. enjoy your rest!

  11. cool! i never knew about that feature! i tried listening to an audiobook on my last LR and i was surprised at how i was able to just zone out. toward the end of the run i switched to my music and it gave me a completely new boost! i liked using the combo!

    1. Yes, near the end of the run and you need an extra boost, it's good to switch over to music!

  12. I think your plan to reach a point where you are not only completely physically recovered, but equally as important - you're mentall craving that training again - is awesome & right on. I listen to an old school MP3 player & load it up with tunes before I head out.

    1. Yeah, I just want to make sure that I don't burn out. I want to get a little bored and then start looking for a new race!

  13. Very cool tip! I listen to music while I run and listen to music and read on my iPhone while I bike on the spin bike. I know, I'm strange. I'm in "relax/recover" mode with my legs too! It's kind of refreshing doing other exercise right now instead of pounding the pavement. Do you have a training plan that you use for marathon training?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I didn't have a specific training plan. I did a marathon training team, so I ran my long saturday runs with them...and then my weekday runs were basically whatever I had time for and could fit into my schedule. I generally tried to follow the suggested mileage from the training team schedule, but I often did a different amount-- sometimes less, sometimes more. It was a LONG training season, like started June 3rd and ended November 10th. I just looked around, but couldn't find the spreadsheet with the suggested mileage on it. I don't know what to suggest!

    2. And this spring, I truly just did whatever I felt like doing (plus the long saturday group runs)!! That's why I was surprised that I had so much success!!

  14. I listen to Pandora on my iPhone while running, but I might consider trying a book. It'd have to be something lighthearted and easy to follow though! ha

    1. Oh Pandora, that's a great idea. You can listen to something lighthearted, or you could try something that requires you to zone out, that'll make the time FLY!

  18. I never run to audiobooks and lately I've been trying to wean myself off of listening to music. I do everything on my iPhone so that is what I will bring w/me in case I want some tunes (or if I'm going on a long run & need my phone for an emergency).

  21. If you are interested in the awesome power of the human mind, you should read this article from the NYT today. I can't get over how cool it is. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/17/science/bodies-inert-they-moved-a-robot-with-their-minds.html?ref=science

It really never occurred to me to listen to an audiobook when I run, but I might have to try it out now!

  23. OMG! Are you in my brain right now?! I'm literally halfway through The Power of Habit right now. (I was reading it on my kindle on the stairmaster, but I wish I'd had the audio book for the treadmill!) I'm OBSESSED With it, and I keep telling everyone I know random facts that I'm learning, because I think it's so crazy cool!

I'm also crediting that book with my ability to (begin to) curb my late night snacking! It's all about the habit! (My cue? Being on my laptop in my bed. My new habit? TEA!)
