Naked Foot 5K

I am excited because I get to run the Naked Foot 5K in DC with the amazing Miss Zippy on Sunday!

We were both lucky enough to win free entries from the fun and spunky MFDre.  Thanks, friend.

What on earth is the Naked Foot 5K?
Does this mean we're going to be running together naked?
Haha no.

The "naked" part of the title refers to the fact that they want to promote natural/minimalist running.  "Naked" does NOT refer to the dress code :) ....
Taking my new Altra's out for a spin a couple weeks ago.
Thanks Altra!!
The folks at the Naked Foot 5k are passionate about getting people of all ages outside, moving, and having some fun.  <------  LOVE THIS

The Naked Foot 5K in DC consists of a barefoot-friendly 5K plus a two day festival for everything that represents active, healthy, and natural lifestyle in Washington, DC on June 23rd and 24th.  Sounds like a blast to me!

The 2 day festival includes:
  • Saturday:  clinics on natural running, nutrition, and more
  • Sunday:  5K followed by demos and booths for alternative fitness and lifestyle practices, holistic medical services, eco-friendly businesses, organic foods, and beverages
Unfortunately, I'm only able to make it to the events on Sunday, but the entire weekend sounds like fun.

Bibs are $40.
Ready to get OUT of the crowded gym and ON to the roads
And to make the whole thing even more awesome, I am going to hopefully get to run a few add-on miles with Amanda :)

Would you ever run 3 miles barefoot?
I honestly am not able to even go that far in my zero-drop shoes yet.  I'm really trying them out slowly because I don't want to get injured.  And I'm still not comfy with the idea of running with NO shoes on, knowing my bad luck, I'd probably step on a tack.
...So the plan for Sunday is to run for fun in my cushy comfy shoes, not for time!

PS major #fail...still working on putting a dent in my e-mail inbox...

  1. I've done the barefoot/socks only running around my track. I had tendonitis on the top of my foot, so it was no shoes or no running. Obviously, I went for no shoes. I have to say, the lack of support definitely bothered my arches.

  2. When I saw your tweet about this post, I seriously thought you were doing a "Naked Run"! haha. I am trying to transition into 4mm drop shoes now and so far so good, but the farthest I have been in just over 3 miles! Have fun at the race!

  3. How fun that you are running with Miss Zippy! Can't wait to read about how it goes. I already like the concept of the race.

  4. I do almost all my running now in the Brooks pure line which is a 4mm drop which technically counts as zero drop (the definition seems to be 0-4mm). I have been wanting to try the new balance minimus though which is really zero drop.

  5. I couldn't run barefoot. I have the pure cadence and can't run in them. It's just to much.

  6. Sounds fun! I have found I'm most comfortable running in shoe with a 4mm drop - somewhere in between traditional running shoes and the real minimalist ones!

  8. Sounds like a fun weekend! I would love to go to a clinic on natural running. I just started and realize that I have no idea how to run!!...heel first, toe first, it all seems so controversial!

  9. I'd be afraid to run 3 miles barefoot since my body has been crazy lately. Wouldn't want to get injured again thats for sure. But I have some Saucony Kinvaras that I use sometimes just to mix it up, but I need to ease back into them!

  13. I wouldn't mind trying to run a barefoot 5K, but I am nowhere near ready for that.... The closest I have gotten is 4 miles on trails in Vibrams, which - I know - everyone says is not the same. Have fun!

  14. I LOVE Altra's! I've raced in the Altra Eve's - they are my absolute favorite shoes. I'm not sure I would run 3 miles completely barefoot, but I'm definitely a huge ran of minimalist running. Best of luck tomorrow!

  15. I'd run 3 miles naked if I could...but mostly I do with my feet :) I am a minimalist lover so this is right up my alley leaving me totally jealous that this is not in my neck of the woods.

I do beach runs fairly frequently on hard packed sand without any shoes on. Sometimes I wear my New Balance Minimal Trail Runners too (might as well be barefoot) so I don't step on shells. I've gotten tired of wondering if my tetanus shot is up to date so I try to wear a little covering on my tootsies.

  16. No, I couldnt! I like the idea of running barefoot but it never works out well for me and I won't risk it again. Have fun!

  17. Found your blog through the Virginia is for Bloggers page :)
I just got my first pair of minimalist shoes, too- but mine are more of a transition shoe. They're Brooks PureConnects. I got them because I've been having really bad plantar fasciitis issues and had tried everything but minimalist running- and nothing else was working- so I figured what the hey. I've only worn them once but so far so good.

I read your "drinking the minimalist kool-aid" post and saw you mention that you'd probably never run a marathon in them- which is good :) because my physical therapist (who I now have to see because of said plantar fasciitis) warned me that most minimalist shoes are really not designed for anything more than maybe 6 miles at a time. He's seen a lot of injuries- stress fractures and such- with folks doing half marathons in Vibram 5-fingers. Not being a nay-sayer, but just wanted to let you know, so hopefully it doesn't happen to you! Glad you're starting out with them slowy, I think that's a mistake a lot of people make. Hope the 5k was fun!

  18. Hope you had a wonderful run! I run in my NB Minimus(es) up to 10 miles - I love them! I'll run barefoot on the track but just can't do that anywhere else - gross - waaay to many things to step into!

  20. Hope you had a great time! They are having one of these in Nashville but it conflicts with another race I have.

  21. I think it would be awesome to run a 5k barefoot; however, I am nowhere near that. :) You got meet Miss Zippy! How exciting. She is so cool. Well, so are you! So I'm sure that was a blast.

    1. Don't mind those grammatical errors. I type way too fast for my own good.
