| Saying HELLO :) during a quick stop in the middle of a bike cruise this weekend |
| I've been doing a long run every Saturday with the marathon training team here in Richmond and sneaking in some occasional hill work, etc. |
You may or may not remember that I didn't actually sign up for the OC marathon until the week of the race because I wasn't exactly sure if I wanted to do it or not. Talk about being indecisive...I need to work on that.
By default, I am signed up for the Richmond Marathon on November 10th (price included in my training team registration), but I sort of wanted to try something new this year.
So please tell me if you have any suggestions of a marathon that is:
-FLAT (yes, I'm a sissy who loves flat races)
-perhaps within driving distance of Richmond VA (although this is negotiable, I'm totally down with making a trip out of it)
-around October/early November
NCR Trail marathon in Baltimore--it's Sat. after Thanksgiving every year. My first one ever! It's small, so you need to sign up fast if you are interested.
ReplyDeleteI'm doing CIM--can't wait!
You're doing CIM? I was on the fence, but this made me realize I just might have to pony up and do it!
DeleteI would say CIM, but it isn't within driving distance from Richmond. It is my favorite marathon, hands down!
ReplyDeleteThe Harrisburg marathon in PA is about 4.5 hours from you and I really loved that race. It was my first BQ and it's a good course for speed. It's mostly flat, a few mild climbs and one little hilly section, but overall a fast and interesting course. Also it's the same weekend as your training race, so it would work well for your schedule. http://www.harrisburgmarathon.com/
ReplyDeleteAnd here's my review of the race:

Atlantic City Marathon! It's 10/21, super flat (along the water on the boardwalk) and is driving distance from Richmond. It's about 3.5 hours from where I live in NoVa. Plus, it's 3 weeks before Richmond, so theoretically you could race AC and then just run Richmond for fun. :)
ReplyDeleteSpace Coast Marathon in Cocoa Beach is on Nov 25th.. but it's likely to be hot =( blech. That is the race that i'm training for... but I am not signed up yet.
ReplyDeleteI'm running Savannah on Nov. 3. It's flat, but the race caters more to the half marathoners. I ran this one last year and loved it, but mostly because it was my first marathon ever. But the town is gorgeous, and you can visit the ocean!
ReplyDeleteI'm running the Portland Marathon on Oct 7th. (Definitely not local, but it would make a fun destination race! We're spending a few days in Seattle while we're out there as well.) You'd have plenty of time to recover and be ready for Richmond. It's selling-out fast though, so you'd have to make a decision about it sooner rather than later.
ReplyDeleteWhat about the Rock and Roll marathon in Savannah Georgia on November 3rd? I may be going to that one, just saying. I just looked at the course elevation profile for it and I would call it pretty flat.
ReplyDeleteRock and Roll Savannah Georgia Marathon, Nov 3rd! I'm doing it too.
ReplyDeleteI'd say Grand Rapids (MI) or Columbus the third week of October, but they're not terribly close for you. Both are flat and fast though.
ReplyDeleteIt's Marine Corps for me on 10/28!
i am unfamiliar with races in that area but im super excited you are planning a fall marathon and your training is going so well:) your pace is rockin!
ReplyDeleteDeciding on marathons too far in advance is overrated :) I am signed up for NYC but after the San Francisco Marathon am looking into finding a super fast one for fall. NYC is easier but still not without its own hills. Road2Hope in Canada on Nov 4 looks super fast..
ReplyDeleteWhat about Philly on November 18? It's a pretty good course with a few minor hills (nothing crazy at all, definitely more flat than hilly), and the weather is good. (30 at the start when I ran it...and I was in shorts, tank, and gloves...it was perfect, ended in the 40's.) It's a small big race...big enough to be super organized and have the perks of a big race, but small enough that it's not CRAZY. And within driving distance. Oh, and cheesesteaks are within walking distance of the finish, I believe...
ReplyDeleteI really liked the half - I did it last year - and imagine the full is pretty fun!

ReplyDelete:)
I'm literally browsing different races right now because I think it'll be more fun to do my marathon training (the longer runs) as races and that link popped up! Hope you had a great weekend!
The Athens Half Marathon (GA) is October 21. They just re-did the course so it's not flat as a pancake, but a lot flatter than it used to be! Check it out: http://athhalf.com/
ReplyDeleteMegan
Do the Wineglass Marathon in Corning, NY with me!! It is super flat, actualy slightly downhill, but you don't notice while running. You get a cute medal, great shirts and it is a small, beautifu race! The race is on Sep 30. You shoud sign uo soon though, it is always sold out.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, you've already gotten so many great suggestions. I'm going to have to read through the comments and write some of these down.
ReplyDeleteLol! I was just going to post suggesting Wineglass! It really is flat and fast, plus it is super well-organized and you get great swag! I'll be running it again this year.
ReplyDeleteBoise may be a little out of driving distance, but the course of City Of Trees is flat & fast. I have volunteered at previous races, but I am doing the half this year in October.
ReplyDeleteI'll second (or third) Philly. Also, I've heard good things about the Bay State Marathon (much longer drive, but who wouldn't want to see New England in the fall?). Savannah is a great city, but I've heard some nightmarish things about the race.
ReplyDeleteI'll fourth Philly. :) I'm running it for the first time and can't wait!
ReplyDeleteoh gosh I have no idea but love the pic of you on the giant U. I am still recovering from a pelvic stress fracture so no races for me!
ReplyDeletethere's one down here in SC on 10/27... $47 if you sign up by 8/15. free place to stay..... :)
ReplyDeletephilly? no marathon for me this fall -- too much to take on with applying to residency!
ReplyDeleteAWESOME pace!!! Your totally kicking butt!!!!!
ReplyDeleteOk. It's a little outside of Richmond, VA, but I'm running the Really Big Free Marathon in Vegas on Nov 3. Well, I'm only doing the 1/2, but there is a full marathon, too. It says the climb is 1,072.83 ft. Is that flat?
ReplyDeleteKeep up the great training!! You rock. :)
I think you need to come back to Ca and do long beach on Oct 7!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteRock n Roll Savannah Marathon on Nov. 3! I heard it's flat and it was going to be my first marathon, but unfortunately I've got IT Band issues that I can't shake so I have to put off training for a marathon until the spring!
ReplyDeleteI think CIM is in order....you can still get in beginning of October with your qualifying times. California is just calling. Seriously...CALLLLINGG....
ReplyDeleteCome run past me at the Malibu International Marathon 11/11/12 :)~
ReplyDeleteThere's the Outer Banks marathon held the same weekend as Richmond!
