Greetings to my fellow Virginia friends!! My name is Katherine and I’m a 3 time marathon runner with a personal best time of 3:26. I’ve had a fast and furious love affair with running and I am super excited to report that I just registered for my first Boston Marathon in spring 2013. I blog about my running adventures, travels, and life in Richmond, Virginia over at Neon Blonde Runner.
The goal of my blog is to inspire others to dream big and shoot for the stars with their goals. I just ran my first road race in 2010 and at that time I would have never dreamed about qualifying for the Boston Marathon, but you never know what you’re capable of until you try. So that’s why I want to give each of you 5 simple tips for getting you started with running…so that you can take off, make it your own and discover what you’re capable of too.![]() |
| You may recognize me from the October 2012 issue of Outside Magazine! My photo was featured in the article that named Richmond the Best River Town in the nation. |
5 Simple Tips for New Runners
1) When you’re starting out, don’t focus on speed. Instead, just run based on time—for example, decide that you’re going to spend 20 minutes jogging and just set out and relax. Focus on enjoying yourself and getting a “feel” for it. I didn’t start to pay attention to speed or pace until I’d been casually jogging for almost a year. This will take the pressure off of it all. This is your “me” time, your time to clear you head. You can gradually increase the length of your runs when you feel comfortable with what you’re already doing.

3) Remember that the hardest part of running is getting out the door. Not many people get super excited before heading out for a jog…but once you get started, the feeling is pretty darn incredible and you won’t regret it. Schedule a time to go running ahead of time and stick with it—I prefer running before work, otherwise it just will NOT get done.
4) Go to a running store to get fitted for a pair of shoes. Running in the right shoes is super important and can help prevent any injuries! Sources recommend that you replace your shoes ever 200-300 miles.
5) Track your progress and stick with it for at least a month before you decide to stop running. Keep a little calendar where you write down how long you ran each day. Or you can record your progress in an online running diary, such as Daily Mile or the runner’s world training log. If you stick with it for a month and still don’t enjoy running, then maybe running’s just not your thing…but I doubt that will be the case because you’ll notice such incredible changes in your life, both mentally and physically.
Running is simple, pure, and has added so much joy to my life. Its benefits will seep into all other parts of your life.
So give it a try! I am always happy to try to pull new converts along with me! So if you live in Richmond, let me know and I’ll tell you about some great local running groups.

Those are great tips. Especially #4. I think that starting out in the right shoes is really good. Also running with a buddy who can encourage you is great too.
ReplyDeleteI'd rate No2 one of the most important. It can be quite difficult to start running on your own. I used to have a buddy ring me most days whatever the weather to go for a run. Then he left to live in South Africa and I found it more difficult to get myself out of the door after he'd gone.
ReplyDeleteSo try to persuade a friend to run with you, or join a running club, and running will feel that much easier and enjoyable.
That's a great post Kate! I definitely struggle with getting out the door, whether it's going for a run or just going to the gym in general... Motivation is so hard sometimes! I usually try to get psyched with some fun music while I'm picking out my workout clothes. :)
ReplyDeleteThose are some great pointers! Getting out the door is tough and wanting to be a fast runner are two things that I think everyone gets sucked into at first. My added tip for new runners is that bad weather does not always mean being stuck on a treadmill. Dress right for it and get out there! You will be surprised how much fun it is....
ReplyDeleteGreat tips!! I usually tell new runners tech shorts are a good investment, you don't have to buy it in a running store, the shirts from Target for example are great! Also, sign up for a race, having a goal helps to stay motivated.
ReplyDeleteGreat points! Tip #1 seems like the best one to me - speed doesn't mean anything for a long time. When I came back from my injury, I just tried to run for time and didn't focus at all on speed. Focusing too much on pace or speed is a great way to get injured.
ReplyDeletewhat a lovely post, these are great tips. I would definitely advocate running with a friend. Sometimes when i'm lacking in motivation or want to end my run after three minutes i think about all those people who can't run for whatever reason and thank my lucky stars that i have my health and can put one foot in front of the other. Then i just get on with it!!
ReplyDeletewhat about after you've been running for awhile then do you have to focus on speed ;) I kid. Seriously I think for lots of runners it's easy to get frustrated at the beginning because we don't have an idea of what it means to pace!
ReplyDeleteGreat tips. I especially like one and three. :)

Signing up for races was my biggest motivator as a new runner. Having something on the calendar (and not wanting to completely embarass myself) really helped me get into it.
ReplyDeleteAMAZING tips. We could all learn more from those (or at least be refreshed on why we run!) Hey, I also wanted to let you know that I'm hosting a blog hop today at my blog and would love to have you join in! http://feetdominatingpavement.blogspot.com. Check it out!
ReplyDeleteCheers!

Love these tips! The most helpful one for me is to run with a friend. I am also really motivated by music, so if I have fun music or something to listen to, or a specific destination to run to, I am a whole lot more excited to get out there and run!
ReplyDeleteI've been out of blog reading for a bit, but I had to come and see if it was you that I just saw in Outside mag! I saw the picture, saw it was in Virginia, saw the neon....I just knew it was you!
