Metric Marathon

Tired of the same ol' regular marathon distance?  Not quite ready for the ultra marathon yet?
Tired of the death-like feeling
at the end of a marathon?
Are you done with that feeling of
being so worn out at the end of marathon that
you can barely hold up your shoulders and
flash your peace signs?
I've got the solution for you...

The METRIC Marathon!

A Metric Marathon is a 26.2K race, which is equal to 16.26 miles.

If you live in the Maryland/DC/Virginia/Pennsylvania area (or don't mind a long drive or plane flight) then please consider checking out the 36th annual Howard County Strider's Metric Running Festival on Sunday November 11th, 2012 at 8:15am.
My friend Amanda aka Miss Zippy (who you may remember from my post about the Naked Foot 5K or the Runner's World Half Marathon) is involved with the Howard County Striders so I'm excited to support her and her organization.

You have the option of running a 26.2K ($55) or 5K ($40) course.

Both races start and finish near the lovely Columbia Lakefront in Columbia, MD.  The Metric Marathon winds through the scenic, yet challenging paths of Columbia and Ellicott City and the 5K follows the paths near Lake Kittamaqundi.

Key features of the race:
-The Pepsi Pacers will be leading pace groups so you have some buddies to meet your goal with you.
-Delicious post-race feast
-Long sleeve premium shirts for the 26.2K and short sleeve T's for the 5K
-Random prizes at the finish (so you don't necessarily have to have a PR or super fast race to win something!)

Have you ever heard of a Metric Marathon?  Does that sound like a fun race distance to you?
Sounds great to me-- the glory of a marathon with the convenience of a shorter race :)

  3. This sounds awesome!! Would love to do this race, especially since it is that close. Too bad I will be in Germany during that time. Well, maybe my flight gets delayed? Who knows!

  4. LOVE that idea....I haven't and don't have the "need" to finish a marathon...guess 26.2 just doesn't appeal to me...but, this does...very cool!!!

Hopefully the word gets out more and one could be planned around MN!

  7. I've never heard of the Metric Marathon either, but it sounds like fun. Do other clubs run this type of race or is this a first?
This could be a very cool idea that would attract a lot of attention and be a good fund raiser for a good local cause. My club runs two races each year but nothing more ambitious than a 10K, which seems to be quite a production.

  9. Interesting on the metric marathon, haha Enjoy it!

I was watching the news yesterday and they did a weather report from Rehoboth Delaware, the beach looked crazy! I remember that you did a marathon there before. Hope the storm isn't causing complete chaos on the east coast, the pics and reports sound bad, especially in NYC.

  10. I ran the Columbia Metric in 2010! It was fun but very hilly. (I had just run the hilly Baltimore Marathon a month prior - but I was STILL not prepared!)

  11. This race sounds like fun- wished that I lived closer. I like the price too- not very expensive. I have never paraticipated in a metric marathon before, but maybe someday I will. I have never seen one advertised for my area before, but maybe there is one in Portland or Seattle.

  12. Great idea. A bit of a rest from marathons, but a step up from halves. And, as a unique race, you're almost guaranteed a 26.2k PR!

  13. Love running races that are different distances to the norm... I don't have to run a time to keep my average up one can run it for fun, so I would be on the start line of such a race!!!

  15. Awesome post, Katherine! And I can't wait to see you again next weekend. I'll be interested to see what you think of these hills compared to Bethlehem's hills! ; )

  19. Love your blog! I am so jealous of fast runner like you! You go girl! I haven't done a full marathon, only halves. I think a metric would be a good distance to start branching out with. Still doable for me but with an added challenge.
