I recently met up with a bunch of girlfriends at the Local

I'd been wanting to try this for a while, so when the generous Local Barre RVA instructor, Alexandra, offered to host us for a class, I was there faster than you could say "splits."

WHAT IS BARRE?
Local Barre RVA's classes fuse elements of Pilates, yoga, ballet, and calisthenics into one hardcore workout.
During various points in the class, we were at the bar, on the floor, and free-standing. Constantly moving, the time flew by quickly.

According to the Local Barre RVA website, the goal of their core-intensive workouts is flattened abs, lean, non-bulky legs and arms, beautiful backs, and lifted seats-- it's one of the most effective, fastest, and safest ways to tone your body. Sure, sign me up, sounds good to me!
Drop in classes are $15 but you can buy packages that bring the price down to $10 or you can check out their unlimited packages if you plan on going frequently.
THE RESULTS
I know I'm not in peak running shape (although I've been lifting weights and doing some running) but I was SO SORE after the class on Saturday that I wasn't even able to run on Monday because my quads were still stinging! Amazing strengthening workout...
If you're in the Richmond area, check out their website, facebook, or twitter. They also have some fun before & after photos on their website.
Thanks for hosting us, Local Barre RVA!!

Have you ever tried Barre?
This was my first time and I'll be back for more...I can see incorporating this into my Boston Marathon training schedule, perhaps once per week for some extra quad/hamstring/core strengthening and flexibility.

You know I love Barre! PS your legs look great in these posts ;)
ReplyDeleteAw thanks Btypes! They're all scrawny from not running, I'm sure they'll beef back up shortly :)
DeleteI was just telling my co-worker this morning that after the first of the year I want to try the Barre Method in Spokane. It just opened up a couple of months ago and I have heard great things about it. I have some runner friends that go to a class at least once a week. I just need to figure out how to try it out and still keep up Farmgirlfit and train for a marathon in May. I think I should just get paid to workout. That would be a dream job!
ReplyDeleteI know, that would be a dream job! But seriously you should give Barre a try (but make sure you don't have an important run the next day because it will make you hurt in places you didn't know existed!)
DeleteWhat a fab write up!!! I''m so addicted to Barre and swear it has changed my entire body now that I've been doing it for a while. So glad you loved it too!
ReplyDeleteAw thanks Stephanie :)
DeleteYes, it's obvious that it works, you've got some fabulous legs!
Love this post! I'm with Stephanie--barre seriously CHANGED my body (especially my legs). And I got so hooked, I just had to start instructing. Come to my class at 715 on Mondays, if you get the chance! Glad you liked it and finally had a chance to come. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Corey, I will most certainly have to try your class! I finally made it after wanting to try it for so long...
DeleteAnd yeah you are pretty much the definition of long and lean muscles!!
I've heard great things about this class, but my problem is that I like EVERYTHING. Hard to keep up! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is also a problem that I have....I wish I could just retire from my job and try new stuff full-time :)
DeleteTook some barr classes for the month of July, and it liked my butt! I would tremble like a fool every class and man those moves rocked my and and butt. Thinking about taking some again. Doesn't do much for the arms, but my core had never felt that strong.
ReplyDeleteYeah my legs were shaking like little leaves multiple times during the class! YES my butt, hamstrings, quads, core...all were very angry (in a good way) the next day :)
DeleteSounds like this Barre is starting to pick up steam..if only I had about 50 grand laying around to invest in a start up lol...
ReplyDeleteI think a lot of people are realizing that it's a simple way to get toned and stronger...hmm maybe I should start one up in my neighborhood. just kidding I don't have that kind of time, but it's a fun idea!
DeleteI love Barre!! It totally works if you are dedicated. I was for a while but with traveling this summer I just got out of the grove. I hope to get back into it, but the drive out there is a killer.
ReplyDeleteThe drive to short pump kills me too, that's the only drawback for me...we need one in the fan :)
DeleteI've been contemplating trying a Barre class for a while, but maybe I need to just dive in. I have exercise ADD, so I think I need more variety to stay interested and this might be the ticket! Thanks for this post!
ReplyDeleteOh there's tons of variety, it would be perfect for easily distracted exercise people :)
DeleteMy legs starting hurting after reading this. This class kicked my butt!!!
ReplyDeleteummm yeah it was difficult!
DeleteSounds like a great class!!!! I would love to try that!! I need more time in my life so I can do all the things I want to do!
ReplyDeleteI love Barre classes. Just wish I could fit then in with all the running. Like you said, I should try to do some throughout my Boston training. I'm sure it would help.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great class - almost sounds like yoga mixed with body pump. Though the prices on that card are super high - $1200 for 1 year unlimited seems really high. Might as well join a cross fit gym at that price. Especially if you have to belong to a regular gym to do other types of workouts.
ReplyDeleteI have only done one barre-like class. It was at Physique 57, and it was soooooooo hard. Oddly enough, I wasn't sore the next day. Very unique concept!
ReplyDeleteI haven't ever done one of theses classes, but I know Im' always surprised by how sore things like lunges and squats leave me!
ReplyDeletei've always wanted to try one of these classes! they seem like they'd hit so many problem areas!
ReplyDeleteI've tried barre method classes and they have, indeed, left me very sore!
ReplyDeleteLOVE barre! Reminds me of my days as a gymnast!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE barre! Reminds me of my days as a gymnast!!
ReplyDeleteOne of my fellow nurses teaches barre classes on days off...she's in crazy good shape and really the only thing she does is barre! I tried a class once and she had to fix my form a million times...I would probably keep doing it but it takes about 30-40 minutes to get to the studio and the classes are $30 or $250 for unlimited monthly...so much money!
ReplyDeleteSounds great! Do you know if there is anything like this in the manassas area?
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried a barre class yet but I have been wanting to for ages. I signed up for one a few months ago and then something came up and I couldn't make it. I'll have to add it to my 2013 bucket list. And I love the idea of getting to take a class as a blogger meet-up! So fun. I have been doing a boot camp for the last 6 weeks, and I can tell that it is really helping me become a stronger runner. During race season, I was so focused on running (and swimming and biking) that I did almost no strength training (even though I wanted to). Adding it back in has been awesome and I hope to keep it up in the New Year. Happy almost 2013 :)
